Shot on Kodak Vision 3, 35mm motion picture film stock by Tom Aschenbach (Tom also edited the film in Final Cut Pro), “The Discovery” tells the story of a scavenger, Rem (played by local Washington D.C. actor, Roger Muntu), and his journey to unearth artifacts from the world that once was in order to learn about his past.

In doing so, he stumbles across a mysterious metallic chamber lying amongst the dilapidation and debris—a time capsule containing various moving image media.  Upon examination, he discovers that most of the items in the box—a handful of video tapes, a hard drive, and a compact disc—have been rendered useless by gulfs of time and decay.  But before giving up, he notices something of major importance.  Underneath all of the plastic media, he retrieves a lone motion picture film reel containing a visual history of the Earth’s past, the one piece of media that survived an unknown catastrophe beyond scope.  Convinced that he found the one true surviving artifact of recorded history, he takes it with him.

The film was photographed in one day using a 35mm Mitchell camera from the 1950s.  Though this camera is old, it is certainly not obsolete, for the end result of the recorded images was sharp, pristine, and bursting with colorful resolution.  It was important that the filmmakers shoot on film to further convey the movie’s theme—that motion picture film is the best archival medium, always and forever, and that the preservation of these images is an important endeavor in an uncertain world.

“The Discovery” was submitted to the Association of Moving Image’s first Short Film/Video Contest, 2010, Philadelphia, PA.
